New Project: FYiMaths

First Year in Maths (FYiMaths) is an Office of Learning and Teaching funded project involving the University of Melbourne, University of Adelaide, Curtin University and University of Sydney.  The project aims to build a vibrant network of academics in teaching first-year mathematics.

The project will focus on building leadership capacity of first-year mathematics program and subject coordinators.   It will identify characteristics of a national first-year culture, best practices in managing first year programs and mathematics support mechanisms. It will also provide professional-development and mentorship opportunities.  It will articulate the roles of first-year coordinators and educators, including expectations, responsibilities, and the capabilities required to effectively lead and manage complex programs of mathematical study within the diversities of degree programs including engineering, science and commerce.  The outcomes of this project will provide practical guidance to educators at the coalface by giving them access to a range of resources and a network of supportive colleagues in similar roles.  It will also inform tertiary departmental and faculty decision-making.

A major part of the project is building engagement with academics through workshops, presentations, a website and interviews.  The workshops and presentations will provide an opportunity for networking and sharing of ideas and clarify the key issues needing to be addressed.

The first workshop will be held at University of Melbourne on Friday 21^st June (full day, with lunch provided).  The workshop will be the first step in establishing the network and will focus on identifying the issues and problems that academics face in managing and teaching first year programs. It will also include professional development sessions.
