Teaching Practices in Undergraduate Mathematics – Workshop

The First Year in Maths project (FYiMaths) is holding a professional development workshop on ‘Teaching Practices in Undergraduate Mathematics’ on 23rd and 24th June, at the University of Melbourne, Parkville. The workshop will provide information on teaching initiatives, practical guides to implementation, opportunities for networking and stimulating discussions.

Over the last year the project team has been interviewing mathematicians teaching in first year mathematics and found a strong interest in different modes of teaching mathematics. We know that many institutions are involved in developing new teaching initiatives. By showcasing initiatives that have been successful, and those that aren’t, we will explore what works, what doesn’t and the challenges of making changes to established practices.

The workshop will be held over 1.5 days on Monday and Tuesday 23rd and 24th June 2014, with Day 1 covering topics such as flipped classrooms, online learning, lecture recording and interactive tutorials.  Day 2 will be a morning session on diagnostic testing, concluding with lunch.

The workshop is intended for academics teaching in first year university mathematics courses who have an interest in developing new methods of teaching in lectures, tutorials or online.  The workshop will be free and will include lunch, morning and afternoon teas.
