DigiExplanations: national roadshow

The roadshow for Associate Professor Garry Hoban’s Office of Learning and Teaching National Senior Fellowship was recently launched at the University of Wollongong. His fellowship is promoting new ways for science students to engage with and learn content by creating different forms of digital media to explain science. The fellowship is timely as it addresses the new Science Threshold Learning Outcome for communication. He is visiting each state and running one day workshops supported by a website www.digiexplanations.com that has been especially designed so that students can access all the resources and instructions for making five forms of digital media without taking any teaching time by discipline academics. The big idea in the fellowship is the notion of “blended media” whereby students can write a 3-4 minute narration and complement it with any combination of visual media — still images + slow moving images + video and students can create their own media or mix and match it with YouTube Clips and Google Images. The access to media content is almost limitless providing enormous opportunities for student engagement and creativity. One-day workshops have so far been held in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and in the first half of 2014 other one-day workshops will be held in Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Canberra and Hobart.
